- Excellence in Literary Initiatives
The Oklahoma City Alumnae Club participates in Read Across America with the Boys and Girls Club and the Oklahoma Education Association. They added a new partner, Feed the Children, which matches the number of books given to children. They utilize Champions are Readers and award each child at least two books. Within this project, the group gave away more than 500 books to the children at the Boys and Girls club this year. The Gathering of Angels event benefits local literacy efforts as well as Pi Phi philanthropies. These local organizations teach English to non-English speaking children, support mentoring programs, provide books for foster children, support school for homeless children, provide emergency relief for homeless children and families and much more. They provide members opportunities to serve in the community and to support and contribute to the Fraternity's efforts to erase the barrier of illiteracy.
- Excellence in Literacy Initiatives
The Houston Alumnae Club hosted a literacy fundraiser called "Follow the Yellow Brick Road ... to Literacy" with more than 500 alumnae and community members in attendance. More than $128,000 was raised. Funds are distributed to local philanthropies based on their written requests and needs through the Houston Pi Beta Phi Foundation. They conducted Champions Are Readers at seven schools within the area and hosted Fraternity Day of Service at M.D. Anderson with a First Book Speed Read and decorated bookplates with children. Members volunteered more than 3,800 service hours in support of their projects with 75 percent of their members participating in the club's literacy efforts.
- Excellence in Community Service
The Nashville, Tennessee, Alumnae Club continues to host its annual fundraiser, Christmas Village. This 49 year old event provides ongoing funding to the local Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center where the club established the Pi Beta Phi Rehabilitation Institute, which serves more than 50,000 individuals with hearing/communications disorders and brain injuries each year. More than $6.5 million has been raised for the center since the event's inception. The institute recently developed a partnership with the army hospital in Fort Campbell, Tennessee, to treat soldiers returning from Iraq with traumatic brain injuries. This event also supports Arrowmont, where it has funded two scholarships and the Tennessee Beta Chapter capital fund.
