Pi Beta Phi at the University of Alabama
Hello from Alabama Beta, and thank
you for visiting our website!
The spring 2010 Pi Phi calendar was
filled with service projects, great activities and preparations for formal
recruitment in August.
We worked with the men of Pi Kappa Phi and the
women of Alpha Delta Chi and Sigma Lambda Gamma for a successful Greek Week
2010, helping the Greek community raise funds for non-profit organizations. Our efforts paid off with a fantastic third-place
finish.
We participated in Sigma Chi’s
annual running of Derby Days and took first place for the second year in a row!
We, along with other sororities in the Panhellenic community, helped Sigma Chi
raise over $30,000 for Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the Children’s
Hospital in Birmingham.

We welcomed everyone to our annual Parent’s
weekend April 16-17 with a barbeque, cocktail party, and, of course, lunch at
the house before the A Day game. Can’t beat
our fried chicken!
Our Fall 2009 new member class got
off to a great start by creating their own philanthropy project at Holt
Elementary School: CAR, Champions are
Readers . The new members visited every
third grade classroom to read with students, and teachers reported skyrocketing
reading levels as a result. We are proud
to say that, even though the CAR program has ended, we continue to visit Holt
and spend one-on-one time with the students.
Pi Phi was featured in the
Tuscaloosa News for our efforts to improve literacy with CAR. Read more here: http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20091114/NEWS/911139920
A new
academic program in our chapter is also producing great results. SPRINT! divides the chapter into groups based
on academic major s, and members earn marks for receiving an A on a test, paper
or project. Winners are rewarded at
checkpoints throughout the race, and the competition is lively.
This
spring we hosted recruitment events across Alabama and were in touch with
potential new members across the country.
Panhellenic Preview Weekend in March brought over 1,000 high school
senior girls to campus for a taste of what recruitment is like. Twenty women of our chapter met with the
girls in small parties throughout the day.
We also hosted a party at Chuck’s Fish on Friday and a fashion show at
Effie’s on Sunday. Thanks to Terry Davis
and our fantastic House Corporation, the Pi Phi house has never looked better,
and it was wonderful to show off our beautiful house.
We
celebrated Founders Day April 28 at our home.
Alumni shared stories and their favorite memories from their college
years. They provided lots of laughs as
we learned some things change, but some things always stay the same. Twelve women were awarded “Outstanding Angel”
awards for their hard work and dedication to Pi Phi throughout the
semester. Women who earned a 4.0 GPA for
the entire year of 2009 were also awarded.
With recruitment coming up August
8-15, recommendation letters are beginning to roll in. Please send us your recommendations
soon. We would also love to have alumni
and mothers volunteer, so please put those dates on your calendar and make
plans to come lend a hand.
Spring has been a great season at
the Pi Phi house, and we are getting ready for a busy and exciting fall
semester, with another large new member class and a championship football team!
Love in Pi Phi,
Jamie Burke
