Listening to Our Sisters

I joined Pi Phi because I felt like I could be myself. During recruitment, each of the conversations I had were easy — not forced. Every Pi Phi I met was friendly; they made me feel like I belonged even before I joined the chapter!

My Texas Gamma sisters are always willing to be a listening ear. During the month of February, it’s especially important for me to bring awareness to my chapter and peers about Black History Month.

For me, Black History Month is a time to think back to those who paved the way for us and who have strived to make change. Still today, there are Black leaders who are working to better our future. Black History Month is a time to recognize this work — past, present and future.

I have learned that I will always need to work hard for the goals I want to achieve. Nothing comes easy; if there's something I want, I will have to put in the work for it. As a woman of color, I have chosen to take on an unofficial role to educate my sisters about what it is like for women like me to be in groups where there are very few others, or maybe even no one, who look like them.

My sisters have always been willing to listen when I express concerns. When I share stories from my own experience, they provide me with comfort and support, whatever the issue may be. Despite our differences, we all have one thing in common: our sisterhood in Pi Beta Phi. No matter what, each of us share a special bond — it’s one of the things I love most about being a Pi Phi.

I am forever grateful for my years in Pi Phi and will carry the memories and friendships with me forever. Pi Phi has given me my best friends and future bridesmaids, as well as sisters who will help me grow into a successful woman.

Throughout the month of February, Pi Phi will celebrate Black History Month and center Black sisters making an impact in their communities around the world. Do you know a sister who should be featured? Are you interested in sharing your story? Let us know!
