Headquarters (HQ) functions as the service center of Pi Beta Phi. HQ directs the financial affairs of the Fraternity, creates programming opportunities and manages marketing and communication with alumnae, collegians, officers and the public, in addition to conducting administrative work.
HQ also houses the Foundation offices.
History
In 1964, St. Louis, Missouri, became the site of Pi Beta Phi's Headquarters. For more than 35 years, the Fraternity rented office space in an office building. As the Fraternity grew and administrative activities expanded, more and more space was rented, until Pi Phi had taken over nearly a whole floor of offices.
Through strategic planning, Grand Council determined that owning a building was a sound financial investment. Through prudent fiscal planning of a succession of Grand Councils, the building of Headquarters was undertaken without a major capital campaign. Lou Ann Montgomery Carter, Oklahoma Alpha, former Grand Treasurer, Chaired the Headquarters Task Force. Other members of the Task Force were: Jo Ann Minor Roderick, Oklahoma Beta; Renee Ross Mercer, Iowa Zeta; Maurine Hager Jones, Montana Alpha; Maureen Wilson Adams, Texas Delta; and Emily Russell Tarr, Texas Beta.
A three-acre lot in Town and Country, Missouri, was purchased. Chiodini Associates designed the traditional-style, two-story brick building. McGrath & Associates built the building, and the interior designer was Studio 31.
The building houses both Fraternity and Foundation staff offices and support rooms, Fraternity archives and historical displays, a training room and a boardroom for Grand Council and committee meetings. There is a walkway of inscribed bricks leading up to the front of the building. The bricks were available for purchase by members, chapters and alumnae clubs. Trees in the "Founders' Grove" were also available for purchase.
A dedication and grand opening was held on November 3, 2002. Fraternity officers, both past and present, alumnae, collegians and friends gathered to celebrate the dedication of Pi Beta Phi's Headquarters. Gratitude was given to those who helped bring the project to reality without incurring debt or soliciting capital funding.
