Founded in 1867 by 12 Monmouth College students who wished to enjoy the benefits of a secret society similar to those formed by collegiate men, Pi Beta Phi has a long record of leadership. Here are some of the most important dates in Pi Phi history.

 

1776

 

Phi Beta Kappa, the first Greek-letter fraternity, was founded.

1867

 

I.C. Sorosis founded at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois.

1868

 

The first convention held at the home of Fannie Thomson in Oquawka, Illinois.

1868

 

A second chapter was installed at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

1882

 

The colors and motto were adopted by convention.

 

1885 

 

First edition of The Arrow was published by Kansas Alpha.

 

1888 

 

The name changed from I.C. Sorosis to Pi Beta Phi.

 

1891 

 

Two delegates met with representatives of seven other women's fraternities in Boston.

 Ontario Alpha 

1893 

 

A National Alumnae Department was organized.

1902 

 

Pi Beta Phi became one of the founding members of the National Panhellenic Converence (NPC).

1908

 

Ontario Alpha was Pi Beta Phi's first Canadian chapter, established at the University of Toronto.

1910

 

Establishing a philanthropy in the Appalachian mountains authorized was at convention.

 

1912

 

A Settlement School was organized in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

 

1913

 

An Alumnae Advisory Committee was organized.

 

1924

 

A portrait of Grace Goodhue Coolidge, Vermont Beta and First Lady, was presented by the Fraternity to the United States.

1925

 

A national headquarters was established.

1928

 

Illinois Alpha reestablished at Monmouth College.

1940

 

Holt House, founding place of Pi Beta Phi, was purchased.

1946

 

The Emma Harper Turner Memorial Fund was established.

 

1948

 

The Harriet Rutherford Johnstone Undergraduate Scholarships were established.

 

1952

 

A Canadian Philanthropy Project was established.

 

1964

 

Plans were made for a Centennial Project to be called Arrowmont.

1970

 

The Arrowmont construction was completed at Pi Beta Phi Settlement School.

1977

 

Collegiate and alumnae departments combined for voting at conventions.

1979

 

The Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts develops year-round programming.

1980

 

A Friendship Fund established for annual alumnae donations.

 

1984

 

Friend to Friend, an alcohol awareness program, was distributed to chapters.

 

1987

 

Aiming Straight, a drug awareness program, was developed.

 

1990

 

Links to Literacy program debuts (service to local communities).

1991

 

Directions, Pi Beta Phi's mentoring and networking program, was established.

1992

 

The Marianne Reid Wild Society was established.

1993

 

The alumnae department celebrates its 100th year.

1993

 

Groundbreaking ceremonies for new dormitory at Arrowmont.

 

1995

 

Pi Beta Phi assumed a two-year chairmanship of NPC. Jean Wirths Scott, Pi Beta Phi's NPC Delegate and a Pennsylvania Beta, serves as Chairwoman.

 

1995

 

The newest dormitory at Arrowmont was dedicated.

 

1997

 

Fraternity Web site launched.

1999

 

Alcohol-free Housing Resolution was adopted.

1999

 

Renovation was completed of the Red Barn at Arrowmont.

2002

 

Grand opening of Pi Beta Phi Headquarters in Town & Country, Missouri.

2003 

 

A redesign of official Pi Beta Phi Web site was competed.

 

2003 

 

Champions Are Readers® (CAR) third-grade reading was program adopted.

 

2003 

  Groundbreaking Leading with Values® member development program was introduced.  

2005 

 

National Education Association's Read Across America partnership formed.

Pi Beta Phi partners with the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

Sister to Sister Emergency Relief Fund founded after Hurricane Katrina.

2005 

 

AlcoholEdu® introduced to undergraduates, with completion of the course a prerequisite for initiation.

2007 

 

Pi Phi partners with First Book® to bring brand-new books to children from low-income families in communities across the United States.
