Mission
The mission of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for women is to promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential and enrich lives through community service.
History
On April 28th, 1867 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinios, 12 women joined together to form a secret college society for women. Pi Beta Phi was the first national secret college society of women to be modeled after the Greek-letter fraternities for men.
Symbols
Colors- Wine and Silver Blue
The Badge- A golden arrow with Pi Beta Phi’s Greek letters on its wings. It also consists of a chain with 12 links- one for each founder.
The Crest- or coat of arms, of Pi Beta Phi is a lozenge balzoned with the Brownlee family crest. An eagle is displayed in the middle, on top of which is the seal of Monmouth College. The blazing sun, with the lating word LUX in the center, is on the eagle’s chest. In the eagle’s right talon is the monogram “IC”, and the left talon holds the arrow of Pi Phi.
The Carnation- Adopted at the 1890 Galesburg Convention, the wine carnation became the official flower with these words, “…As it is the rich, wine color that makes the flower attractive, it, too, is the warm fervent loyalty of its members making Pi Beta Phi beautiful in the eyes of everyone.”
The Angel- Fraternity history tells of songs about Pi Phi angels becoming popular in the late 1930s and early 1940s with skits depicting Pi Phis as angels, often used in recruitment. Angel collections are popular among many Pi Phis. The founders did not choose the angel as a fraternity symbol; however, it is a worthy unofficial symbol of Pi Beta Phi.
