Recruitment at Cornell

Getting ready for final round!

We are thrilled you are thinking about participating in Recruitment here at Cornell!  We hope you will take the time to think about how becoming a member of Pi Beta Phi will enhance your college experience.

Our Recruitment is a process of mutual selection where you’ll get to know all the benefits of becoming a member of Pi Phi while we get to know you better.  Potential New Members will return to Cornell the week before classes commence in January to begin the five-day Recruitment process.  The four rounds will give us the chance to learn more about you while you get to meet our wonderful members and learn more about the values and experiences we've gained during our time in Pi Phi. Despite the true cliché, we hope you see that Pi Phi has given us the opportunity to make lasting joyous memories and lifelong friends! Now, is your opportunity.

Here’s the break down:

The potential new members (PNMs) to meet members from all 13 chapters on campus, watch skits, take house tours, and decide which sorority is the right one for them. Membership recruitment consists of four rounds; as the week progresses, rounds grow more formal and longer. This allows potential new members time to get a better sense of the houses.

  • Round 1- Days 1 and 2 : Recruitment week begins with open houses where PNMs are given the opportunity to meet the ladies of each of Cornell’s 13 chapters.
  • Round 2 - Day 3 : House tours are given to the PNMs called back through mutual selection.
  • Round 3 - Day 4 : Each chap
ter performs a skit to highlight attributes about its members, and shares its philanthropic activities with PNMs. Girls are given time to connect with another member.
  • Preference Round- Day 5: This is the most formal of all rounds where PNMs are asked up to 3 houses. On pref round, PNMs reflect on which sorority is the best fit for them and rank their choices.
  • Bid Day: Each new member finds out which chapter she has been invited to join, and New York Delta excitedly welcomes its new members!

Myths About Pi Phi Recruitment....

A Pi Beta Phi legacy will always receive a bid for membership.

FALSE! Pi Beta Phi recognizes the value of the special relationship between legacies. Members are encouraged to fill out a legacy introduction form to help chapters identify the legacies going through recruitment. However, recruitment is a mutual selection process between a PNM and a Pi Phi chapter. Collegiate chapters must invite legacies to a minimum of one invitational round. Should a legacy be invited to the preference round, she shall be placed at the top of the chapter’s bid list.

Chapters are required to call the alum who submitted an RIF if the PNM is released from recruitment.

FALSE! Chapters are not required to notify alumnae during recruitment of the status of the PNM for whom they submitted an RIF. The chapter may send a final new member list to local alumnae clubs in the area to let them know of their NM class once Bid Day and pledging festivities have occurred.

Chapter alumnae who attend recruitment are allowed to take part in membership selection.

FALSE! Only active chapter members, the AAC chairman or AAC membership adviser are to be present during membership selection. If a Fraternity officer (regional team, consultant or director) is present, she may also attend.
