Make Your Mark for Literacy
This annual Fraternity-wide event takes place in March and unites Pi Phi’s membership in an effort to advance literacy. Chapters and clubs raise funds and/or books through service events that benefit their communities.

In 2010, Pi Phi partnered with First Book® for the "Make Your Mark for Literacy" campaign. The goal is to donate another 50,000 books. Alumnae organizations, collegiate chapters and their communities can help us achieve this goal by decorating bookplates and sending them back to Headquarters. A Fraternity Day of Service toolkit, which includes the blank bookplates, arrived in the mail in the spring. For every bookplate Headquarters receives, one child will receive a brand-new book from First Book.

Past Fraternity Day of Service Events

2006 Fraternity Day of Service

In 2006, Pi Beta Phi held its first Fraternity Day of Service and collaborated with Southwest Airlines. Kids flying to and from 25 Southwest cities on March 3, 2006, were given their very own Dr. Seuss book. More than 8,000 books were given away that day. Other literacy events were also held in numerous communities on or around that day. Check out our Literacy Events page for more information.

2007 Fraternity Day of Service
In 2007, Pi Phi once again worked with Read Across America for its annual Fraternity Day of Service. This time, a Virtual Book Drive (complete with a coffee-themed campaign) was held in partnership with First Book. NEA and Read Across America are national partners of First Book as well. 50,000 new books were raised by March 2, 2007 — in honor of the "Cat in the Hat"’s 50th Birthday! For a $5 donation, or the price of a latte, members could “virtually” donate books to kids in need.

2008 Fraternity Day of Service
In 2008, Pi Phi partnering with First Book for a "Make Your Mark for Literacy" campaign, raising another 50,000 books. Chapters and clubs were encouraged to work together, on campus and in their communities, to promote literacy issues by asking people to sign and personalize Pi Beta Phi/First Book bookplates. These bookplates were placed in the new books donated in Pi Phi’s name. For every signed bookplate, First Book donated a new book, 50,000 new books, to children in need! The 50,000 new books were added to the Fraternity’s 200,000 books distributed in Pi Beta Phi’s name on Founders’ Day, April 28, 2008.

2009 Fraternity Day of Service
2009 was another successful year for the literacy awareness event! Pi Beta Phi once again partnered with First Book for the "Make Your Mark for Literacy" campaign and raised 50,000 books. Again, for each decorated bookplate Headquarters received, First Book donated a book to children in need! Pi Beta Phi added 200,000 brand-new books to the distribution, which was added to at Pi Phi's 67th Biennial Convention, where Pi Phi added another 10,000 to the distribution, making a total of 260,000 donated books!
