Champions are Readers

Literacy

CAR
Champions are Readers® (CAR) is a month-long reading enrichment program for third graders. This easy-to-administer program is designed to supplement reading activities that schools already provide. The CAR program can be used for one classroom or several, and it is specifically designed to complement other local literacy programs that a club or chapter may direct.

CAR improves reading skills, instills a lifelong love of reading and promotes family literacy. Here’s how it works:

  • Pi Beta Phi members host an assembly to introduce CAR to students.
  • Students are challenged to read 15 minutes at home each day with family and friends.
  • Pi Beta Phi gives each student an interactive CAR literacy workbook, which includes a bookmark and folder.
  • Students track reading progress each day on a "reading racetrack" in the workbook.

Pi Beta Phi recognizes each child at the end of the CAR month with a certificate of recognition, a new book and a CAR medal.

Through the CAR program, alumnae organizations and collegiate chapters highlight reading enrichment in their own schools and communities during a designated month of the school year and sponsor incentives, including a recognition ceremony when the program ends.

Pi Beta Phi believes that if children are champions in reading, they will be champions in life!
