Read > Lead > Achieve
At Pi Beta Phi, we believe in the power of reading.
We believe reading always has been — and always will be — a powerful step toward a life of enduring impact. We believe that when one out of four children cannot read, that is one too many.
We believe in inspiring readers, sparking imaginations and igniting the desire to learn. We believe that readers become leaders. And, we believe reading is the foundation of all that we can achieve in life.
For more than a century, we’ve committed ourselves to creating a more literate and productive society. We’ve changed with the times, but never shifted our vision. So at Pi Beta Phi, we honor the past while we build for the future…
One child … one moment at a time… one life changed forever
THE STORY OF ONE
The Story of One campaign encourages individuals to help Pi Beta Phi promote reading. It is our goal that by 2017 we will impact one million lives. The campaign was revealed at the 2013 Convention and will continue through Pi Beta Phi's 150th anniversary in 2017. Pi Phi will promote various ways members and non-members can help promote reading and get involved in The Story of One campaign. To start off the campaign, we are looking for the membership to vote, promote, direct, prepare and plan! Check back often for the latest news surrounding The Story of One campaign.
First Book Partnership
In June 2007, Pi Beta Phi and Pi Beta Phi Foundation announced its corporate partnership with First Book, an international nonprofit organization founded in 1992 with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Through innovative programs, such as First Book Speed Read™, CAR Connect and the Local Literacy Initiative, First Book and Pi Beta Phi are committed to bringing new books to children from low-income families in communities across the United States and Canada. Pi Phi and First Book have already donated $1 million, the equivalent of 2 million brand-new books, since the beginning of the partnership. For more information about First Book, visit www.firstbook.org.
Champions are Readers
Pi Beta Phi's unique program, Champions are Readers (CAR) is a monthlong reading enrichment program for third-grade elementary students. CAR encourages students to develop daily reading habits and provides Fraternity members with an easy-to-implement program encouraging literacy. This program is designed to supplement reading activities already provided by schools. The CAR program can be used for one classroom or several and is specifically designed to complement other local literacy programs.
Launched in 2011, CAR Connect allows Pi Beta Phi alumnae organizations and chapters the ability to connect Champions are Readers (CAR) sites to First Book, automatically providing the CAR program with $200 to spend in the First Book Marketplace.
Arrow in the Arctic
Pi Phi's Canadian philanthropy, Arrow in the Arctic, supports literacy in Canada's Northern library systems: the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Established at the 1967 Convention to commemorate the centennials of Canada and Pi Beta Phi, Arrow in the Arctic donations also preserve the language and culture of the north's Inuit and First Nations. Pi Beta Phi is the only National Panhellenic Conference group to have its own Canadian philanthropy.
