Pi Beta Phi has chosen literacy because…
At Pi Beta Phi, we believe in the power of reading.
We believe always has been--and always will be-- a powerful step toward a life of enduring impact. We believe that when one out of four children cannot read, that is one too many.
We believe in inspiring readers, sparking imaginations and igniting the desire to learn. We believe that readers become leaders. And, we believe reading is the foundation of all that we can achieve in life.
For more than a century, the sisters of Pi Beta Phi have committed themselves to creating a more literate and productive society. We've changed with the times, but never shifted our vision. So at Pi Beta Phi, we honor the past while build for the future…
One Child.. one moment at a time.. one life changed forever.
...people who can read tend to be more successful and have more learning capacity.
...literate parents set their children up for successful and healthy lives.
...illiteracy is a factor in the rate of homelessness, domestic abuse, poverty and lack of healthcare
...80% of citizens in prison didn’t finish high school; half of those cannot read or write.
...increasing high school graduation rates by just one percent would save $1.4 billion in costs associated with jails and prisons.
We feel very privileged to be able to have a part in this sorority and college life. We would like to share with others that success comes with literacy. Literacy is the core of all education.
