Champions Are Readers

Champions are Readers® (CAR) is Pi Beta Phi’s unique reading enrichment program for students in prekindergarten through third grade. Since its launch in 2003, students across the United States and Canada have participated in one of Pi Phi’s most successful Read > Lead > Achieve® reading initiatives.

Recently revised according to national standards for education, the CAR program now allows for differentiation to accommodate students' varying academic needs. Chapters and alumnae organizations must indicate the grade level(s) and number of students participating in the program on the order form found at the bottom of the page. Please download and read the Implementation Guide to learn about the details of the CAR program prior to ordering. The materials in the CAR packs include:

Thanks to a grant from Pi Beta Phi Foundation, all of the CAR program materials —including folders, activities, certificates and books—are FREE! It doesn’t matter if the order is for 10 or 100 students, chapters and alumnae organizations are only responsible for shipping and handling costs.

The program is intended to be an interactive reading and mentoring experience between Pi Beta Phis and children from their local communities. The activities are designed to be flexible to be implemented in schools, after school programs, community centers, libraries and more! The purpose of CAR is not to simply hand out free books, but to engage children in a positive reading experience and foster a lifelong love of reading.

To order CAR materials, complete the order form here! Once you have completed the CAR program, click here for an evaluation form.

If you have any questions regarding the CAR program, please contact literacy@pibetaphi.org.

The San Jose, California Alumnae Club hosts the Champions are Readers program with Blackford Elementary School fourth grade students.

The club uses a participation calendar to document students' daily reading, and then awards certificates of achievement at the end of the program to give the children the incentive to read.

The students' love of reading grows with each visit from the Pi Phis.
