Champions Are Readers

Champions are Readers® (CAR) is Pi Beta Phi’s unique reading enrichment program for students in pre-kindergarten through third grade. Since its launch in 2003, thousands of students across the United States and Canada have participated in one of Pi Phi’s most successful Read > Lead > Achieve® reading initiatives. Recently revised according to national standards for education, the CAR program now allows for differentiation to accommodate students’ varying academic needs. Designed to create an interactive reading and mentoring relationship between Pi Phis and children from their local communities, the program engages children in a positive reading experience and fosters a lifelong love of reading.

Thanks to a grant from Pi Beta Phi Foundation, all CAR program materials — including folders, activities, certificates and books—are provided to participating chapters and alumnae clubs at no charge. Whether the order is for 10 or 100 students, chapters and clubs are responsible only for shipping and handling costs.

When ordering CAR materials, chapters and clubs should indicate the grade level(s) and number of students participating in the program on the order form below. Please read the Implementation Guide to learn about the details of the CAR program prior to ordering.

To order CAR materials, please complete the order form

Once your chapter or club has completed the CAR program, please help Pi Phi by submitting an evaluation form.

If you have any questions regarding the CAR program, please contact literacy@pibetaphi.org.

The San Jose, California Alumnae Club hosts the Champions are Readers program with Blackford Elementary School fourth grade students.

The club uses a participation calendar to document students' daily reading, and then awards certificates of achievement at the end of the program to give the children the incentive to read.

The students' love of reading grows with each visit from the Pi Phis.
