Pi Beta Phi Chapter at George Mason University to Close

It is with a heavy heart Pi Beta Phi announces the closure of its Virginia Iota Chapter at George Mason University, effective November 7, 2022, following a vote by Grand Council. After careful reflection by collegiate members of the chapter and Fraternity leadership, it became clear Virginia Iota was unable to sustain operational obligations while providing a positive chapter experience due to continued declining membership numbers. Pi Beta Phi volunteers and Headquarters staff have worked closely with Virginia Iota for several years to provide elevated levels of support in hopes of increasing membership recruitment and retention; however, efforts were unsuccessful.

“A positive membership experience is an essential cornerstone of Pi Beta Phi and starts with a chapter membership roster capable of sustaining chapter operations,” said Grand President Lisa Gamel Scott. “The decision to close a chapter is never taken lightly and weighs heavily on the hearts and minds of all involved. We welcome Virginia Iota collegians into alumnae life and look forward to their continued commitment to living our values. Virginia Iota will forever be an important part of Pi Beta Phi’s story.”

The Virginia Iota Chapter was founded in 2014, and nearly 400 women have been initiated into Pi Beta Phi through the chapter.

Founded in 1867 at Monmouth College in Illinois, Pi Beta Phi has installed 206 collegiate chapters and nearly 300 alumnae organizations worldwide. Pi Beta Phi promotes friendship, develops women of intellect and integrity, cultivates leadership potential and enriches the lives of members and their communities. The Fraternity believes in the power of reading and through its philanthropy, Read > Lead > Achieve®, promotes a lifelong love of reading that can unlock true potential.
